who was killed in a shutout this morning, tamerlan is a tsarnaev was 26. in 2007 he became a legal resident in america, he was a student at bunker hill community college and competitive boxer. this violent and drautic series of events was not set off by police, but by the suspects themselves, who were apparently trying to escape law enforcement. here's how it played out. around 10:00 p.m. last night, the suspects robbed a store. they then proceeded to fatally shoot an m.i.t. security officer and hijack a mercedes suv. the owner of that vehicle was held hostage for half an hour while the two brothers pulled $800 out of an atm. they released the owner of the mercedes unharmed. police chased the suspects into watertown, where this shootout took place. the suspects exchanged fire with police and threw explosives towards them. at one point, tamerlan sarn ev got out of the car wearing an ied strapped to his chest and was shot by police. his body was run over by dzhokah tsarnaev as he fled the scene. at present the manhunt continues. the police are looking for a younger brother and a poss
-old little boy. dzhokhar tsarnaev still on the lose and apparently unhurt. his brother, 26-year-old tamerlan tsarnaev killed in the middle of the night after a firefight with police, whether he died from police bullets, or whether he died from some kind of an explosive device he was carrying with him or maybe had on his person that is yet to be determined. jenna: we are working on getting you best live pictures as possible. the presence of law enforcement in this area of watertown, massachusetts is about as much as we've ever seen in any live situation to date. you just saw some of those vehicles turn around the corner. we are awaiting a press briefing on the ground in watertown. mike tobin is live on the scene there with more context for us today. mike. >> reporter: let me first break in with a little bit of news that we are getting from our justice department producer mike levin. this is very compelling in that he is saying that dzhokhar tsarnaev was able to withdraw money during the heat of all of these gun battles. the gun battle itself happened around 10:48 p.m. we see according to the

last night in the interaction with police, tamerlan tsarnaev who was 26 years old. it all started last night in cambridge. there was a shootout with an officer at m.i.t. on the m.i.t. campus. that officer having been killed last night, found dead in his police cruiser. the suspects then reportedly carjacked an suv, and a chase ensued. at one point they did release the driver unharmed. they went into watertown which is just outside of cambridge, about 10, 15 minutes outside of cambridge and that's where there was a shootout with police. by 1:30 a.m., the first suspect tamerlan tsarnaev was dead and the second suspect was on the loose and being chased. this morning at about 5:00 a.m. police shut down the mbta. they have also now seen the shutdown of amtrak between boston and providence, a major shutdown. ed davis, commissioner of police, says this is a major man hunt. >> overall at this hour we've seen a lot of activity. they have surrounded the home in cambridge of the suspects where both lived. the a.p. reportedly got in touch with their father overseas in russia. their father expressi
two. these are the pictures that came out overnight. tamerlan tsarnaev. number two on the loose, a fugitive right now, believed to be armed and dangerous, described as a terrorist, he was caught on camera last night, he's been on the loose for several hours and all of boston, the entire city of boston surrounding suburbs in lockdown right now. >> that's right. abc news just spoke to those boys' father, he is in shock and implores his son to himself up. he told abc news, he said that he think his sons were set up and he said they were very nice kids, never touched explosives and never learned how to handle weapons. he said that his younger son is on the run and in hiding because he's also afraid, words from his father. never saw indication at all atwas capable of violence. we're reminded by brad garrett, our fbi specialing at, often these terrorist lead double lives. we begin with chief investigative brian ross, on the ground, all through the night in watertown, brian, a night of gunfire, bombs, police hunting down the terrorists right now. >> reporter: indeed, george. he was las
by the suspects. in the shootout that ensued in watertown, elder brother, tamerlan tsarnaev got out of the car with explosives strapped to his chest, firing at police officers. at least one was hit and badly wounded. tamerlan was killed, with dzhokhar reportedly ramming the car through police to flee. and that's where we are this afternoon. with a 19-year-old suspected terrorist killer on the loose. and a city at a standstill. nbc news' national investigative correspondent michael isikoff joins us now from boston. mike, just start us off with exactly where this manhunt stands at this very moment, because less than about 20 minutes ago, we understood that there were two suspects that the police were seeking. now we understand that's been reduced to just the one. >> reporter: right. just another example of how much misinformation has been in this case from the beginning. a lot of this is coming from police scanners, where police think as some point they have a suspect or person of interest and it turns out to wash out. just like we often get bum tips in the news business that never quite pan out
. but some of them tied directly to them. authorities believe one of the sites tarred to tamerlan tsarnaev tied to youtube video has emergence of black flags. that is key part of jihadist mythology, al qaeda's main publication for afghanistan, pakistan, is named van guards, shorthand. the myth that muslims will win the first battle against their enemies beginning of armageddon in corazon, afghanistan, pakistan, parts of iran and central asia. and the last battle will be fought. this does not make them al qaeda but perhaps they sympathize or at least tamerlan did with that cause. we're being cautious here. it is a link on a page. there are number of links on a page authorities believe was tied to tamerlan. they are looking at all of this. it they're also seeing that perhaps the 26-year-old was in fact more of a leader in this. and the 19-year-old less of one. we talked about, 19-year-old dzhokhar tsnaraev coming to the country with family in roughly 2002, maybe early 2003. we can't confirm when tamerlan came into the country. it may be a separate time, actually. we also can't confirm whethe

. the older brother, tamerlan tsarnaev, was 26. nbc news learned he spent six months last year outside of the country. authorities are still piecing together where he went and what he did during that time. there are many questions tonight. joining me to help answer them is nbc investigative correspondent michael isikoff and former director of the national counterterrorism center michael leiter. and former fbi profiler clint van zandt. let me start with michael leiter. the other day, it seems like a year ago, two, three days ago you, had this sense, professional instinct, if you will, that this killer, one of the two bombers, was a local. tell me how you came to that assessment. >> well, chris, my take -- >> he is a local. >> he is a local and he's got deep ties to boston. and my take was there's no doubt that the boston marathon is a worldwide known event, but unlike many of the targets, a lot of people really have used in the past, there's something specific to boston about it. there's something specific about the finish line and about patriots day and my take from that was that this
